There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that features a number of amenities on top of the casino, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
